How Much Should You Ask a Funder For

The right request amount is not automatically the maximum a funder allows. It should make sense for your actual need, the size of the project, and what the donor has historically supported.

Start with the real budget

Know the cost of the program or project before deciding what to request. The ask should connect to specific expenses or a defined share of the total budget.

Review the funder’s range

Look for stated minimums and maximums and, when possible, review recent awards. A foundation that usually gives $10,000 grants may be unlikely to fund a first-time $75,000 request even if the application technically allows it.

Consider the relationship

A first request may be different from a renewal request with a funder that already knows your work. Relationship history can influence how ambitious an ask reasonably feels.

Know what happens with a partial award

Decide whether the program can scale, whether another revenue source can fill the gap, or whether specific activities would need to change. Many funders ask this directly.

Make the math easy to understand

A strong request tells the donor what the money will support. Connect the amount to the program budget and avoid numbers that appear arbitrary.

Build the next step

Use this as a working tool for your organization. Turn the ideas into one or two specific actions, assign ownership, and put a date on the next step. Good From Here is built to help nonprofit founders move from an idea to a stronger, fundable organization with practical systems they can actually use.
