How to Build a Nonprofit Board That Actually Helps

A nonprofit board should be more than a list of names. The strongest boards understand the mission, know what is expected of them, and contribute to governance, strategy, accountability, and the organization’s long-term health.

Recruit for what the organization needs

Look beyond titles. Consider the experience your nonprofit needs now and over the next two years, such as finance, legal knowledge, fundraising, community relationships, program expertise, marketing, or lived experience connected to the mission.

Set expectations before someone joins

Explain meeting frequency, committee work, fundraising expectations, attendance requirements, term length, and the level of preparation expected. Clear expectations prevent frustration on both sides.
